The following is an excerpt of a story from the Battlespace anthology, currently available on Amazon.com.
This excerpt is from All We Know of Heaven and Hell by Guinevere Robin Rowell:
Sergeant Lang set an intra-squad radio down on the long table. “So we’re missing Rex, Sin and Jodi,” she said. “They’re pinned down, but we’ve got contact.”
“Can I talk to him?” I asked.
“That seems like pretty much the worst idea in the world,” she said. “Sorry.”
“Fuck!” Berrick’s shout seemed to sum up my feelings. But he continued, “We were down there six hours past my goddamn call. Now what?”
“I’ll see what I can do,” Lang promised. “For right now, just stay suited up and ready to go back.”
“Yeah, I’ve got a call coming up too.” Darby said. “This is fucked up. Last goddamn chance to talk to our families unless they delay the jump-”
“And you know that’ll never happen.”
“Shut your mouths,” Lang said. “We have work to do, and all your whining isn’t helping. Once we’re past the current crisis, I’ll work on that one. All right?”
Oh my god. Did we miss the chance to call back to our daughter? I checked my wrist. Our turn for the call was only half an hour away.
“We’re supposed to have our call home,” I told Lang.
But she only had so much empathy and I’d already maxed her out. “Well, great. You decide where your priority is, then, going back to get Rex or talking to the folks who are safe at home.” She clapped my shoulder. “I’m going to see if Master Guns has an update.”
